Half the Size, Double the Fun: FUJIFILM's X half Digital Camera | B&H eXplora

Invoking the half-frame concept of the film world, FUJIFILM's new X half camera melds the immersive experience of analog with the ease and sharing of digital. Hot on the heels of releasing their genre-bending compact medium format camera, the GFX100RF, FUJIFILM swings to the other end of the imaging spectrum with their latest innovation, the petite X half Digital Camera.Included is a simple, no-frills optical viewfinder, a vertical rear LCD touchscreen, a slim, pill-shaped LCD displaying the chosen Film Simulation, and the Frame Advance Lever which gives the feel of winding film on a film camera, all with the same design philosophy that’s distinguished FUJIFILM’s X-series cameras.Choose the film simulation, the length of the “roll,” and the desired exposure setting–and the camera locks into that configuration (with a few built-in escape hatches) until the “roll” is complete and it’s time to “develop” the images with the new X half app or via computer.Built for sharing, the X half wirelessly connects to an optional INSTAX printer to immediately print and share images. The dedicated X half app also makes it easy to digitally share photos or videos and can also be used to develop images made in the Film Camera mode.

My first 'film roll' on the Fujifilm X half - by Sam Byford

There is something to be said for cameras that are so small you take them everywhere and so fun to use that you don’t necessarily think about the resulting images while you’re making them. There is something to be said for cameras that are so small you take them everywhere and so fun to use that you don’t necessarily think about the resulting images while you’re making them. That’s what Fujifilm is going for with its new X half, a compact camera with a vertically-oriented sensor designed to evoke the days of 35mm half-frame.This is objectively a pretty silly camera. You all know I love 1” sensors, but usually when they’re paired with fast lenses in thinner phones than the X half. The optical viewfinder is a basic tunnel with no frame guidelines and a ton of parallax. And the flagship feature, “film camera mode”, locks down functionality so you can’t use the LCD screen, change film simulation mode or view any of your photos until you’ve shot enough frames and “developed” them in a phone app. But the X half is also adorable, so obviously I had to try it.I only seriously got into photography quite late, after I’d moved to Japan, and early on I was mostly into film. It was a much more affordable hobby back in 2009 — not just because of film costs, but because lots of companies like SuperHeadz and PowerShovel would put out tons of lo-fi toy cameras that served as design playgrounds.

Fujifilm will reveal its newest X Series camera next week. Fujifilm's newest X Series camera teaser promises the new camera will "blend innovation with nostalgia." A New "G" Series PowerShot is Coming - Canon Rumors

We don’t think we’ll have a whole like of “G” series camera, but it would be nice if the next one had an EVF, Flash and more of a zoom range than the PowerShot V1. I say, putting the PowerShot G3 X and PowerShot G7 X series into a blender would be a good place to start. We’d also like to see a new “G” series camera to cost less than the $1000 PowerShot V1. I can’t see an sort of new PowerShot camera to come in under $500. The volumes would have to be there first. ... Go to discussion... TAGGED:PowerShot G3 X Mark IIPowerShot G7 X Mark IIIPowerShot V1spotlightI like the V1 a lot. I bought it for both photo and video use, and it does both well. I wouldn’t be opposed to more range on the long end, but for me having the V1 start at 16mm (FF FoV) is much better than the 24mm wide end of the G-series cameras. I’d pick 16-50 over 24-xxx every time. For the last 5+ years I've used a Rebel-class body as my travel camera. I even have a pancake lens for my R10 now so it kinda fits in a coat pocket, but mostly I use the little kit lens and it works pretty well. ... My G3X is almost worn out through overuse. I would dearly love to see a replacement with a 24mm-480mm equiv., DIGIC X and 32MP sensor based on the R7.With the PowerShot V1, Canon re-entered the compact camera market with somewhat of a bang. The camera has been well received by creators and some photographers, while other photographers weren’t into the camera being video focused and missing features such as a flash, EVF and size.

The unusual vertical LCD encourages vertical compositions, a thoughtful touch if you're tired of rotating cameras sideways.Abbott finds the camera's “Film Camera Mode” interesting, letting you simulate shooting on rolls of film with between 36 and 72 shots, adding date stamps and film-like aesthetics directly in-camera.
